Yin Yoga

Suitable for almost all levels of students, Yin Yoga is a perfect complement to the dynamic and muscular (Yang) styles of Yoga that emphasise internal heat, and the lengthening and contracting of our muscles. Yin Yoga generally targets the connective tissues of the hips, pelvis, and lower spine.

Yin teaches you to relax in simple poses that you hold, and hold - so that the stretch penetrates the connective tissue in your spine, hips, and other joints. Over time the fascia - the tissue that binds groups of muscles - may become inflamed and stick to the muscles, which can cause pain and stiffness, but repeated, gentle stretches can help release those sticking points.

While initially this style of Yoga can seem quite boring, passive, or soft, Yin practice can be quite challenging due to the long duration of the poses. We can remain in the postures anywhere from one to five minutes.

Yin poses are derived from traditional Yoga poses, though they have been renamed to distinguish them. Connective tissue may actually be the key to discovering subtle energy channels in the body (called Nadis in Yoga and Meridians in Traditional Chinese Medicine). The best argument for Yin may be how it calms your mind, creating a sense of deep refreshment.

Who will benefit:

  • All Yogi's who need to access deeper joint flexibility

  • Sportsmen and women who are fit and strong but are extremely tight and lack flexibility

  • Elderly people who want to improve their joint flexibility

  • Pre- and postnatal women

  • Hyperactive, busy people who find it hard to still the mind and focus on connecting with themselves

  • Anyone wishing to start Yoga, but not ready for the active Yang-type classes that may be too daunting

Yin Yoga classes are for all levels of students as poses are adjusted for beginners.
